DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Dodge City High School football team used a 21-point second quarter to help boost them to a 45-7 blowout win over the Salina South Cougars on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Salina South’s lone touchdown in the game came with 6:25 to go in the first half on a 17-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Brandt Cox; that would tie the game up at 7 apiece after Red Demon running back Alden Knedler ran it in from two yards out in the opening quarter.

The Red Demons quickly answered on a scoring drive that took just over two minutes off the clock, capitalized with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Beau Foster to a wide open Matt Friess with 4:04 remaining in the half.

The Red Demons defense came up big with a three-and-out, forcing a Cougar punt. Dodge City’s offense had great field position and made the most of that. Foster found De’Jon Delgado in the front left corner of the north end zone for a 25-yard touchdown reception to put Dodge up 21-7 with 1:59 remaining in the half.

After another South punt, the Dodge City offense came onto the field trying to put more points on the board with under a minute to go. The Red Demons did just that, as Foster threw a bullet into the arms of a sliding Friess across the middle of the end zone with nine-tenths of a second remaining in the half to give the Red Demons a 28-7 lead at the half.

The Cougars got the football to begin the second half and once again Delgado was involved in the play, but this time on defense. The senior corner back jumped the pass from South’s Galloway and took it 46 yards to the house to extend the lead to four scores, 35-7 with 11:40 to go in the third quarter. The only other scoring in the quarter came on a 35-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Jose Valverde to put the Red Demons up 38-7 after three quarters.

If the game wasn’t already over, Knedler followed his blockers from nine yards out to put the game out of reach and give Dodge City the 45-7 lead. The Red Demons were able to play reserves the final six minutes of the fourth quarter en route to their second straight victory.

Dodge City (2-0) will travel to Wichita Heights on Friday night with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. from Heights Stadium. The Sutherlands Pregame Show with Phil Stephenson and the Voice of the Red Demons, Sean Boston begins at 6:30 p.m. on 98.1 FM, Z98.1 Mobile App and westernkansasnews.com/z98.
