Red Demons basketball wins two thrillers at Hugoton
Hugoton, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Both Dodge City High School basketball teams picked up close wins at Hugoton Tuesday night. The girls winning 44-43 and the boys coming from behind to win 78-75 in overtime.
The Lady Red Demons(2-1) led by as much as 12 in the second half at Hugoton(2-2), before the lady eagles rallied to eventually take a one point lead. Then Dodge City freshman Kisa Unruh hit two free throws with 15 seconds to play to put the Lady Red Demons back ahead. On the ensuing possession Brooklynn Harper missed a runner then got her rebound and had her second shot blocked by Unruh to end the game.
Dodge City was led in scoring by Unruh with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ezinne Okoro recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Laney Hoskinson led Hugoton with 13 points. Dodge City outrebounded Hugoton 42-16.
The Dodge City boys rallied from a nine point second half deficit to force overtime and eventually outlast Hugoton(2-2) for the 78-75 win. The Red Demons(1-2) also needed a defensive stand late after Beau Foster made the first free throw and missed the second with 10 seconds left in overtime. Damian Lewis shot a deep three from the left wing that hit the side rim as time expired giving Dodge City their first win of the season.
The Red Demons were led by Hunter Heath and Kaden Riekenberg with 12 points each. Noah Sowers also chipped in with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Both Dodge City teams are back in action at home Friday night when they host Eisenhower. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on Z 98.
