Red Demon hoops teams swept at Hays

The Dodge City high school basketball teams both lost at Hays Tuesday night. The girls lost 48-38, while the boys fell 92-80.

Girls

The Dodge City girls led 24-14 early in the third quarter and then the Hays offense came alive. The Lady Indians closed the third quarter on an 18-7 run to take a 32-31 lead. In the fourth quarter Hays(12-7, 5-2) would outscore Dodge City 16-7.

The lady Indians forced the lady Red Demons(10-9, 4-3) into 21 turnovers  that led to 20 points. After shooting 9-18 in the first half Dodge City shot 3-20 in the second half, finishing 12-38 for 32 percent. Hays shot 5-24 in the first half and 11-21 in the second half, finishing 16-45 for 36 percent.

Savannah Schneider led the way for the lady Indians with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Brooke Denning had 11 points 4 rebounds and 5 assists and Isabel Robben added 10 points. Chidera Okoro had a monster night for Dodge City with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Boys

Hays jumped out to a 24-12 lead in the first quarter, Dodge City responded with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 28-25. From there the Indians closed the half on  a 22-7 run to seize control with a 50-32 lead at the half. The closest Dodge City(9-10, 2-5) would get in the second half was ten points.

Hays(13-6, 7-0) dominated the glass 44-31 including 22 offensive rebounds for 25 second chance points. Dodge City also had 19 turnovers that led to 26 points off turnovers.

The Indians had five players score in double figures. Cole Murphy led the way with 21 points. Ethan Nunnery had 18 points and 8 assists, Peyton Kieffer had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cade Swayne had 11 points and Tragdon McCrae added 10 points. John Johnson had his best game of the season for Dodge City with 21 points. Noah Sowers had 20 points and Adrian Mendoza had 15 points.
