Red Demon hoops teams pick up wins at Guymon

Guymon, OK(westernkansasnews.com) Both Dodge City High School basketball teams won at Guymon Saturday, the boys 70-59 and the girls 32-29.

Boys

The Red Demons got their second win in less than a month against the Tigers (65-49 on Dec. 19) and their second win in less than 24 hours behind a big fourth quarter. Dodge City(5-3, 1-0) led at halftime 40-28 the led the lead slip away in the third quarter when Guymon outscored them 24-9, taking a 52-49 lead into the fourth quarter. The Red Demons would respond in the fourth quarter outscoring Guymon 21-7.

Multiple players had big nights for Dodge City to get their fourth straight win. Sophomore John Johnson led the way with his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior Hunter Heath also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Noah Sowers struggled most of the night but came up big in the fourth quarter scoring 11 of his 15 points.

Defensively Dodge City forced Guymon into 29 turnovers and had 22 points off turnovers. The Red Demons also had an advantage at the free throw line shooting 22-35, while the Tigers were just 12-26.

Girls

The Dodge City girls got some revenge on Guymon following their loss at the buzzer to Guymon at home 39-37 on Dec. 19.  A defensive stop in the last 5 seconds preserved the win for the Lady Red Demons when Guymon missed a deep three and had a second attempt blocked by Chidera Okoro at the buzzer.

Dodge City pounded Guymon on the glass, outrebounding the Tigers 43-23. Defensively the Red Demon girls held Guymon to just 9-43 shooting from the field for just 21 percent. Dodge City held Guymon’s leading scorer Meagan Bellar to 12 points on just 3-19 shooting.

It was a complete team effort for Dodge City as freshman Kisa Unruh led the way with just 6 points. Chidera Okoro had 5 points and 10 rebounds and Payton Magouirk had 5 points and 5 rebounds.

The Dodge City girls are back in action Tuesday night at Great Bend at 6 p.m. The boys are off until Thursday night when they begin the Tournament of Champions taking on Maize in the opening round at 7 p.m.
