Red Demon girls overwhelmed by Bishop Miege
Newton, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School girls basketball team fell to Bishop Miege 63-29 Thursday in the first round of the Newton Invitational Tournament.
Bishop Miege jumped out to a 24-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Stags shot 25-51 for 49 percent from the field, while the Lady Red Demons shot just 11-41 for 27 percent. Bishop Miege(9-2) also turned 20 Dodge City(6-4, 1-1) turnovers into 23 points.
Despite being down 47-11 at halftime the Dodge City girls continued to fight and actually outscored Bishop Miege 18-16 in the second half.
Bishop Miege had five players score 8 points or more including Courtney Harms who led the way with 11 points. Jordynn Gonzalez, Fallon Russell, Ashton Verhulst and Faith Hawthorne all scored 8 points.
Kisa Unruh led the way for Dodge City with 13 points and 4 rebounds. Caroline Williams and Lauren Gleason provided some good minutes off the bench, Williams had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Chidera Okoro struggled from the field with just 1 point, but grabbed 6 rebounds.
The Dodge City girls will play in the consolation bracket Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Kapaun Mt. Carmel, who fell to Olathe NW 59-44. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:45 p.m. on Z-98 and westernkansasnews.com.
