Red Demon girls get first WAC win at Great Bend
Great Bend, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School girls basketball team got their first WAC win of the season Tuesday night at Great Bend 48-32. The game was nip and tuck through three quarters, with neither team taking a lead bigger than 4 points and 8 lead changes and 5 ties. Then in the fourth quarter the lady Red Demons pulled away outscoring the lady Panthers 21-6.
Dodge City was able to build their lead in the fourth quarters with mostly reserves on the floor as Kisa Unruh, Ezinne Okoro, Chidera Okoro and Madison Armstrong sat with three fouls each. The lady Red Demons got a lift off the bench from Caroline Williams, Lauren Gleason, Hayden Sanchez and Brianna Buller during that stretch.
Dodge City (6-3, 1-1) shot the ball better than they had been of late, shooting 16-38 from the field for 42 percent, they also shot 15-27 at the free throw line. Defensively they held Great Bend (3-7, 1-2) to just 11-49 shooting at 22 percent. The lady Red Demons also took advantage of turnovers scoring 14 points off of them.
Once again it was a team effort for Dodge City as no one scored in double figures. Leading the way Ezinne Okoro, who played through a leg injury, with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Freshman Kisa Unruh also had 9 points. Payton Magouirk and Madison Armstrong also chipped in with 8 and 7 points. Carley Brack led the way for Great Bend with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
The Dodge City girls are off until Thusday Jan. 25 when they begin play in the Newton Tournament. The boys begin play in the TOC at United Wireless Arena this Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Maize.
