Red Demon boys roll, girls fall against Nickerson

Boys

The Red Demons jumped out to a 24-6 lead and never looked back against the Panthers. Nickerson at one point cut the deficit to six in the second quarter, but Dodge City took a 39-24 lead into the half and led by 14 or more the entire second half.

Dodge City forced Nickerson(3-14) into 33 turnovers that led to 38 points. The Panthers did out rebound the Red Demons 57-32, but had just 13 second chance points. Dodge City(9-7, 2-2) shot 31-72 from the field for 43 percent.

Hunter Heath led the way again for Dodge City with 21 points and 7 rebounds. John Johnson had 16 points on 5-5 shooting in 11 minutes and Noah Sowers had 14 points and 5 assists. Tanner Shrag led the way for Nickerson with 20 points and 6 rebounds.

Girls

The Dodge City girls led 13-11 with 3 minutes to go in the first half then Nickerson went on a tear. Closing the half on a 10-0 run to take a 21-13 lead into the half. The Lady Panthers would open the second half on an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night 29-13. Dodge City got back within 6 38-32 with 3 minutes to play, but from there Nickerson would close it out. Madison Ontjes would get a steal and layup to put the game away at 41-32.

Dodge City shot just 12-54 from the field for 22 percent and 4-28 from three for 14 percent. The Lady Red Demons also had 22 turnovers that led to 16 Nickerson points.

Ontjes led the way for Nickerson(9-7) with 14 points 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Morgan Stout had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Chidera Okoro led Dodge City(8-8, 2-2) in scoring for the third straight game with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Caroline Williams chipped in with 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Dodge City is back in action Friday night at rival Garden City. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on Z-98 and westernkansasnews.com. The girls will tip-off at 6 p.m. as the lady Red Demons look for a sweep over the lady Buffaloes. The boys will follow as Dodge City looks for payback from the 64-61 loss in the first meeting.
