Red Demon and Buffalo hoops teams split

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School girls basketball team beat Garden City for the third time this season 33-29, while the Buffalo boys handled the Red Demons 68-53.

Girls

The Lady Red Demons and lady buffaloes played a nip and tuck game throughout on Tuesday night, with the lead never getting bigger than five points. There were seven ties and three lead changes as Dodge City beat Garden City for the third time this season.

Maybe the most interesting stat from the three girls meetings is that the point total between the two teams was 62 points in all three games(38-24, 35-27 and 33-29). The lady demons scored 19 of their 33 on second chance points and points off turnovers. Dodge City(9-8, 3-2) had 10 offensive rebounds for 7 points and forced 20 turnovers that led to 12 points.

Neither team shot the ball well, Dodge was 10-35 and Garden(5-13, 1-5) was 11-33. The lady demons were 13-26 at the foul line, while the lady buffs were just 7-18.

Chidera Okoro led the way for Dodge City for the fifth straight game scoring 13 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Freshman Kisa Unruh had 11 points and 4 rebounds. Josie Calzonetti led the way for Garden City with 11 points and 4 rebounds.

Boys

The Buffaloes got off to a hot start jumping out to an 18-10 lead in the first quarter and the lead to 33-18 at halftime. Dodge City would respond and start the second half on a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to 35-33. Garden then responded with a 13-2 run to close the quarter leading 48-35. The closest the Red Demons would get in the fourth quarter was nine points as the Buffaloes beat them for a second time this season.

Garden City shot the ball much better from the field shooting 21-46 for 46 percent and were 6-14 from three and 20-27 at the foul line. The Red Demons(9-8, 2-3) shot just 16-48 from the field and 5-23 from three. The Buffaloes also won the rebounding battle 35-28.

On senior night Garrett Doll led Garden City(11-7, 5-1) with 14 points 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Kyler Lamb had 10 points off the bench and Demarcus Elliott had 9 points and 4 rebounds. Noah Sowers led the way for the Red Demons with 18 points and 4 assists.
