The Recent Slide Continues: GCCC Loses Both Games in Pratt

Pratt, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The slide for the Garden City Community College basketball teams continued on Wednesday night losing 63-55 in the women’s game and 78-76 in the men’s.  The teams are a combined 1-9 in conference with the women holding the only win during that stretch beating Barton County last Wednesday night at home.

Men’s Highlights

In the men’s game Garden City opened up with an 11-2 run and held a two point lead at halftime 40-38.  The Broncbusters had trouble getting off the mat in the second half as Pratt jumped out to a nine point lead early on the strength of a 13-2 run.  

GCCC Coach Brady Trinkle saw his team chip away at the lead and jump ahead twice late in the game, but down by two in the final seconds Tidell Pierre had a good look on a 25 footer that fell off the rim and Jonathan Bell’s stick back missed ending the game.

Pratt one of the best shooting teams in the nation at over 50 percent improved to 3-1 in the Jayhawk while the Broncbusters fall to 0-5.  Coach Trinkle believes his first league win is within reach.

Tyrell Spring led the Broncbusters with 19 points on nine of sixteen shooting.  Vladirmir Brodziansky added 15 points and 4 rebounds for the Beavers.  Pratt had two big advantages in the game.  The Beavers outrebounded the Broncbusters 37-29 and converted 22/30 free throws (73%) while limiting Garden City to just 7/12 from the line at 58%.

Women’s Highlights

The night started out with Garden City women’s team losing 63-55 in a game where they allowed an early 11-0 run to begin the game.   The Broncbusters climbed back to within one point 31-30 to begin the second half and had two separate possessions where they could have taken the lead and failed on both opportunities.

Taleah Williams finished two rebounds shy of a double-double (14 points and 8 boards) Tori Spann added 13 in the loss for the Broncbusters who have lost six of their last 7 and are 10-9 on the season.  

Jazzmen Ortiz the freshman from Temple, Texas led the Beavers with 23 points.  Kajaira Mays followed with 16.  Both leading scorers for Pratt went 9 of 10 from the free throw line.  

Garden City returns home to face Cloud County Saturday night.  Tip time for the women is at 5:30, men follow at 7:30.  Pre-game coverage on KBUF AM-1030 and westernkansasnews.com begins at 5:15pm.
