Ray L. Nilhas, 87, died Friday, August 5, 2016 at his home in Dodge City. 

He was born November 10, 1928 at Jetmore, the son of Frank and Hattie Elizabeth (Hendrickson) Nilhas. A lifetime area resident, he was a cowboy for Stanley Feed Yard in Dodge City for 34 years. 

He served in the United States Army with the 351st Infantry Regiment during the Korean War attaining the rank of Corporal. 

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Dodge City. 

On January 21, 1954 he married Betty Reed at the Church of Christ in Dodge City. She survives. 

Other survivors include: 2 daughters, Beverly Burney and husband Philip, Dodge City and Brenda Pouge and companion, Greg Martinez, Dodge City; his brother, Lloyd Nilhas and wife Ruth Ann, Wa Keeney; 5 grandchildren, Melissa Lindenman and husband Shawn, Rachel Kitch and husband Brian, Daniel Pogue and wife April, Amanda Burney and Danna Pogue and 10 great grandchildren, Jacob Lindenman, Leah Lindenman, Autumn Klien, Ethan Pogue, Chase Pogue, Summer Weil, Brody Weil, Jordan Kitch, Jacquelyn Kitch and Kade Hammes. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jason Burney, 3 sisters, Mabel Nilhas, Jessie Fern Hunt and Mae Lorene Rasmussen and a brother, Merle Nilhas. 

Memorial services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the Church of Christ, Dodge City with Rev. Gary Bennett officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, with full military rites by Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714 and Military Honors for the State of Kansas. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. 

The family suggests memorials to Dodge City Church of Christ or Hospice of the Prairie both in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
