Pratt girls win 4A Regional in McPherson, seven area wrestlers qualify for state

McPherson, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first weekend of postseason wrestling took place on Friday and Saturday at McPherson High School, as 29 schools made their way for the Class 4A Girls Regional. It was the first year of the format in girls wrestling, as the previous four years saw Classes 4A-1A combined.

In its first year on its own, Pratt would win the regional by 15.5 points over runner-up Colby. Rock Creek placed third as a team. From the area, Scott City was 14th, Ulysses 23rd, Holcomb 26th and Hugoton 28th.

There would be seven area wrestlers qualify for state. Scott City had three, as two were in the finals. Haylie McDaniel placed second at 110 pounds, Ashlyn Rose was the tournament champion at 155, and Audrey Escalona was seventh at 105 pounds. Ulysses qualified two wrestlers, as Yosselin Delgado was fifth at 100 pounds, and Jeymi Rosales was fourth at 125 pounds. Holcomb’s Abigail Redden was fourth at 235, and Hugoton’s Lauren Nix was eighth at 170, becoming the school’s first state qualifier in the girls program.

Gabrielle Koppes from Clay Center was named the KWCA Regional Wrestler of the Year, while Rock Creek Coach Brad Burenheide was selected the KWCA Regional Coach of the Year.

The Class 4A Girls State Tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 28-March 1, at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
