Police officer shot, suspect arrested at motel in Russell
RUSSELL, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer has been shot in the leg and a suspect taken into custody at a Kansas motel.
Russell Police Chief Dale Weimaster said in a news release that shots were fired just after 8 p.m. Thursday while officers were responding to a report about a possibly suicidal man at a Days Inn.
The release says the patrol sergeant was taken to the hospital in Russell before being transported to the larger Hays Medical Center. The 17-year-old veteran of the Russell police force is in stable condition.
The name of the suspect wasn’t immediately released. Police say the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Russell County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation.
