Phillipsburg wins Goodland regional; area golfers qualify

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In perhaps one of the most competitive regionals in Class 3A, the Phillipsburg golf team took home the regional championship at Sugar Hills Golf Course in Goodland on Monday.

The Panthers held off host Goodland, winning by 11 shots, while Cimarron fell six shots back, just missing the cut to qualify their team for state. Scott City finished fourth and Hugoton was sixth as a team.

Five of the top 10 golfers qualified for state individually. Cimarron qualified two for state, as Matthew Mowry finished fourth with a score of 79, and Joshua Weishapl was sixth with a round of 84. Scott City’s Jackson Lewis and Kale Wheeler were ninth and 10th respectively, shooting an 89. They were the final two individual qualifiers for state.

The Class 3A State Golf Tournament will take place on Monday, May 20, in Emporia, at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
