Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-More than 100 players will be on the sideline during the Busters’ Friday-night scrimmage at Buffalo Stadium. Only 63 will remain standing after Sunday.
“It’s not something I look forward to as a coach,” Head Coach Matt Miller said. “Telling guys who I know can play, that we don’t have room for them is not fun.”
And for Miller and his staff, there’s a massive talent pool to pick from. But the reality is only a certain number of slots are open. The toughest decision: Certifying the 20 out-of-state players.
Baring any unforeseen circumstances, we can assume that freshman quarterback Akeem Jones, wide receivers Brandon Snell, Nile Daniel and Montario Burchfield, linebackers D’Vonta Derricott and Earl Clark, running back Mike Gearst, left tackle Dontavious Blair, corner back Tim Hill and safety Mikail Grace are virtual locks. If Miller decides to keep only two quarterbacks (Patrick Hoard would be on the outside looking in) then Grace would probably be the emergency backup. .
“We’re about there,” Miller said in regards to his 11 starters. “We feel good; we’ve really had some guys step up.”
As for the quarterbacks-Jake Curran and Akeem Jones will take snaps with the first team, but according to Miller, Curran will be get the first crack. So has anybody actually won the job yet?
“No decision has been made yet,” Miller said. “Jake is getting the first opportunity because of his experience, but Akeem is ahead of where I expected him to be-so I really don’t know.”
