Oh Sweep! Broncbuster volleyball sets down Butler

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-The last time the Garden City Community College volleyball team won a season opener, most of the current players were freshman in high school.

On Wednesday night at home, the Broncbusters finally ended that streak.

Garden City dismantled Butler in three sets 25-20, 25-14 and 25-22.

“Our intensity was outstanding,” Head Coach Jacquelynne Matula said afterwards. “We were very discipline.”

The Broncbusters were never seriously challenged until the final set. Leading 19-10, the Grizzlies stormed back to cut it down to a two-point match. That’s when Matula called timeout.

“I just wanted to calm them down,” she said. “I told them to finish.”

Her team complied.

Shaley Tiamula put an end to the rally with an emphatic kill, sending the Broncbusters to their first opening night victory since 2012.

“All the girls are buying in,” sophomore Ashley Webb said afterwards. “That’s the biggest difference from last year.”

Broncbusters will be in action again on Friday at the New Mexico Military Classic vs. South Mountain and Cedar Valley.
