Oh No! Seward sweeps Garden

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Nick Salazar’s post game quote couldn’t ring any truer: A game is 40 minutes not five. That summed this one up brilliantly.
The first five minutes, the Busters were brilliant-jumping out to an early 12-0 lead. But the rest of the game was dominated by Seward County in a 71-59 win at the Perryman Athletic Complex Saturday night in the opening game of Jayhawk Conference play.
“I thought they (Seward) adjusted,” Salazar said afterwards. “They took a punch and responded well. We didn’t have an answer.”
Sandra Davis jump started the Garden City (8-8) attack after scoring the game’s first points. What ensued were five unanswered buckets as the lead swelled to 12. The Busters hit their first five shots; then it all came unraveled.
Seward’s first points came at the 13:50 mark on Korina Chapman’s and one. That bucket-sparked the ninth-ranked Saints attack, who outscored the Busters 36-15 to close the half up by nine points.
Seward County (16-1) guard Alana Simon delivered one of her best performances of the season. The freshman from San Mateo, California, scored 14 points to lead five Lady Saints in double figures. Chapman notched 14 points and six rebounds; Kyndal Davis, Payton Fleming and Shanise Brooks each added 10.
Garden City started the second half much like they did the first, scoring the eight points to cut the deficit to one. But Payton Fleming’s transition layup doused the run and the momentum-building the lead back to double digits.
Shauqunna Collins led the Busters with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sandra Davis recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards.

Malcomb Hill-Bey scored a career-high 26 points and Secean Johnson added 20 points and seven rebounds as Seward County ended Garden City’s 11-game winning streak with a 75-69 victory at the Perryman Athletic Complex Saturday night in the opening game of Jayhawk Conference play.
“We hustled for about eight minutes the entire game,” Assistant Coach Duncan Hudson said afterwards. “For the other 32 minutes, they out hustled us.”
But hustle stats didn’t lose this game for the Busters-missed free throws did; how about 15 of them. Garden City finished 27-of-42 from the line a missed a critical one late when Jade Cathey had a chance to complete a three-point play and make it a one-point game.
The Saints (11-6), also missed 15 charity shots. But they hit them when they counted including a dagger and one with under 30 seconds to play that iced the game.
The Busters (14-3) found themselves in a 53-53 tie at the 9:49 mark of the second half. And things seemed to be going in their favor after Seward County coach Bryan Zollinger was hit with a technical foul. That strategical move by the veteran head man payed dividends as Garden City missed two free throws and came away with an empty possession. The Saints meantime scored the next five points and never trailed again.
Jade Cathey led four Busters in double figures with 12 points. Jalen Variste and Talan Whiatker each had 11; sophomore Reuben King, who fouled out, finished with 10 points.
