Norton boys and girls teams sweep Christmas City Wrestling Classic titles

WaKeeney, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first wrestling tournaments took place over Friday and Saturday, as Trego Community High School was the host of the Christmas City Wrestling Classic tournaments, with the girls starting things off on Friday and the boys wrapped up Saturday.

Friday’s girls tournament featured 25 schools and over 200 wrestlers. Norton would edge MCL foe Russell for the team title, and Colby would take home third place. From the area, Scott City tied for sixth, Wichita County was 19th, Cimarron 21st, Lakin 23rd and Stanton County came in 25th. Top area medalists included Scott City’s Ashlyn Rose winning the 155-pound division, teammate Dayanara Jimenez was third at 145, and Brooklynn Gossman placed fourth. Wichita County’s Jentri Porter placed third at 105 and Lakin’s Luna Vazquez was fourth at 110.

The boys took to the mats on Saturday for a good day of competition. Norton would win by 10 points over Phillipsburg, while Scott City edged Trego for third place. The Beavers would have two tournament champions, as Matthew Wheeler won at 150 and Blaze Gossman was the champion at 165. Taking second were Trenton Frank at 126 and Alex Rodriguez at 138. Fourth place finishers were Tyler Roberts at 144 and Hunter Fry at 190. Lakin was 11th and Cimarron placed 12th. Owen Ostberg was fourht for the Broncs at 175, while for the Bluejays, McCoy Nash was third at 144 and Ben Vogel was fourth at 215 pounds.
