Audio Highlights: GCHS vs. Trinity

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Caleb Tramp found himself all alone in the gym three hours before game time. Once the ball went in the air, the junior standout was still all alone.

Tramp scored a game-high 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting and the Buffs ran wild over No. 3 Wichita Trinity 58-38 in day one of the 2013 Southwest Classic at the Garden.

“This was a team effort,” Head Coach Jacy Holloway said afterwards. “Caleb was very assertive in this game-getting to his spots.”

Tramp was good, but his team’s defense was even better. The Buffs blocked four Knights’ shots (three by Luis Rodriguez; one by Akil Love) and held Trinity to just 31 percent shooting (16-of-52).

Garden City (3-1) plays Denver South Friday at 7:30 pm (KWKR 99.9 FM; westernkansasnews.com/kwkr)…Trinity (1-1) vs. Holcomb (No Radio)

Girls Highlights: GCHS vs. Trinity

Garden City, Kan-David Upton was furious on Monday following his team’s lackluster performance in the Hays shootout. His tone had become more even keeled after Thursday night.

Jaymie Berbeck notched a season-high with 20 points; Taryn Tempel added 13 as Garden City steamrolled Wichita Trinity 64-24.

“We were much better; we’re still not where I want us to be,” Upton said. “Our execution was much better tonight.”

The Buffs held the over-matched Lady Knights to just 12 points in the first half and took 24 more shot attempts thanks to 30 Trinity turnovers.

Garden City (2-2) shot a season-high 51 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-best nine times.
