No charges filed against three local law enforcement officers for shooting

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Sunday prosecutors announced that no charges would be filed against three local law enforcement officers involved in the shooting death of Cristino Umana-Garcia.

The shooting happened on October 5, 2017 in rural Finney County and involved two Finney County Sheriff deputies and one Garden City Police officer. Umana- Garcia, 29, allegedly charged at officers with a knife when they shot and killed him.

Attorney Lynn Koehn of Haskell County reviewed the Kansas Bureau of Investigations findings and made the ruling.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Garden City Police both investigated the shooting. Police Chief Michael Utz issued the following statement after the announcement.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Cristino Umana-Garcia and others involved.” The Garden City Police Department has cooperated fully with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as it pertains to the criminal investigation into this incident. GCPD has also completed its own internal investigation of the event and finds no violation of federal or state law, City of Garden City policies or procedures, or Garden City Police Department regulations.”
