Mrs. Bonnie May Drewes

Mrs. Bonnie May Drewes, age 80, passed away on August 6, 2016 at Brookdale in Dodge City, Kansas after a valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was born on May 30, 1936 in rural Ford County (Bellefont) to Harry W. and Helen (Kuhn) Wetzel. She was baptized on June 21, 1936 and confirmed on April 2, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church, Offerle by Rev. Buss. Her Confirmation verse was 1 John 2:15. 

Bonnie was a 1954 graduate of Dodge City Senior High School and was named Spring Sports Queen in 1953 as well as a member of the drill team. While in High School, she served as assistant secretary to the athletic director. She graduated from Dodge City Community College in 1956 where she was also the Winter Homecoming Queen and a two year member of the Conq-Ette Line and a cheerleader. She worked at Western Power and Light for many years until she married Clarence Clifford Drewes on May 11, 1963 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church where they were both members (Dodge City). Clarence and Bonnie owned Bowes “Seal Fast” Distributorship for several years, as well as being actively engaged in a vast agri-business farm and ranch. Bonnie also served as an advisor on the Ford County Conservation District Board for several years until she retired in 2014.

Survivors include a daughter, Delisa Kayleen Drewes of Offerle, and a son, Cedric and wife Diane Drewes of Dodge City and two granddaughters, Evann Drewes and Kelsey Drewes; two brothers, Alan L. and Louis R. Wetzel both of Offerle, and sister, Elvira J. Setzkorn of Offerle. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence Drewes on October 23, 1996 and brother Robert W. Wetzel on July 15, 2016.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dodge City with the Reverend Randall Jahnke presiding. Burial to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation from 12:00 to 8:00 PM on Wed. Aug. 10th and Thurs. Aug. 11th with the family present 6-8 pm on Thursday evening. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Brookdale Senior Living Center of Dodge City, or Church World Service- 2016 CROP Walk for Hunger (Lawrence, Kansas) to benefit Lutheran World Relief.
