Meng named new GCHS Swim coach
Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-Garden City High School has announced that Jennifer Meng will be the head coach for the swim team for the 2016-17 school year. She was approved by the Board of Education at their September 12th meeting. Meng brings with her a long experienced history of swimming, both personally and now as a swim mom.
“I am eager to get started in this position and see where I can lead the program” Meng said. “Garden City High School has great students that are willing to work to become better competitively.”
Meng brings valuable swimming experience from her career that totaled over 13 years with the Garden City Seahawks and also for Garden City High School, where she was coached by her mother, Johnanna Borden. During her career, she set many records; several of which stand to this day, including three (two individual, and one relay) at Garden City High School. These records include 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 200 Medley Relay.
“She has a great depth of knowledge in swimming and athlete psychology,” Garden City High School Athletic Director Drew Thon said. “She understands where the program is and what is needed take the team to the next level of swimming to be competitive at the state level. She also knows the history of the program and believes in a strong investment in our youth swimming programs and will be personally involved in bringing those back to prominence.”
Meng is a graduate of Garden City High School and is currently in her sixth year as a counselor with the Garden City school district. Her husband, Ryan Meng, is currently an assistant principal at Garden City High School. Together they have three children, Avery, 11, Olivia, 8, and Kyle, 1. Both Avery and Olivia have been swimming competitively for over three years.
