Mary L. Hertel, 83, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Life Care Center, Andover. 

Mary was born November 21, 1931 in Spearville, Kansas, the daughter of John and Caroline Margaret (Tonar) Riedlinger. On October 24, 1950, she married Alfred Hertel at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1996. 

Mary was a long-time resident of Dodge City where her family and many friends loved her. She spent her days as a homemaker, dedicating her life to her husband and daughters. All who knew her felt Mary’s kindness and her smile could bring such joy and comfort. 

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and former member of the Daughters of Isabella both in Dodge City. 

Survivors include: 2 daughters, Jean Ann Mages, Liberal and Michelle Lynn Tompkins and husband, Lance, Andover; a loving brother, John O. Riedlinger, Dodge City; 3 grandchildren, Alex Mages, Michael Mages and Zachary Fry who were the light of her life; and many nieces and nephews who brought her much happiness. 

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Brandon Mages, a brother, Ronald Riedlinger and a sister, Virginia Peters. 

Vigil service will be 7:00 pm Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 901 Central Ave., Dodge City, with Fr. Wesley Schawe presiding. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. There will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel. 

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association of Wichita in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
