Marriage Equality Group Grateful For Friday’s Supreme Court Decision

(westernkansasnews.com) Now that the dust has settled what are the effects of the US Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex marriage in all fifty states. The ruling trumped votes in 32 states upholding marriage as between a man and a woman. Sandra Mead of Equality Kansas believes the 5-4 decision defended the constitution rather than ignored it.

Those who ruled in favor cited the 14th amendment equal protection clause. Now that they’ve achieved marriage equality, Mead wants other protections for gay and lesbians stretching from bans on denying housing to the workplace.

What will happen to individuals who still oppose same sex marriage on religious grounds, but may be called upon to assist a gay couple with their wedding? Sandra Mead of Equality Kansas does not think people will have to violate their own beliefs.

What about presiding over weddings? Depends on who you are affiliated with.

Some critics are worried the Supreme Court opened the door for polygamy. Mead felt it was inappropriate to comment on the issue at this time.
