Margie Ruth McLain

Margie Ruth McLain, 87 died Friday, August 28, 2015 at Western Plains Medical Center in Dodge City, Kansas. She was born April 15, 1928 in Castro County, Texas the daughter of Wayne & Ruth (Golden) Carthel.
Margie grew up in Castro County, Texas where she attended school. In 1946 she married
A.O. “Mac” McLain in Lockney, Texas. The lived in Texas for a short time. In 1950, they moved to Eads, Colorado and in 1953 they moved to Lakin, Kansas. They have lived in Lakin since. Margie was a caretaker for most of her life. She worked as a cook for a boarding house for the employees of Colorado Interstate Gas Co., and later worked as a nurse and babysitter. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Lakin, Ks.; a member of the Kearny County Saddle Club, and Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority. Margie enjoyed animals, rodeos, watching sports and the “Days of Our Lives”, Collecting pigs and Mickey Mouse, and spending time with her sorority sisters.
Survivors include a daughter Sue & husband Price Shipley of Lakin, Kansas; 2 brothers Bob Carthel of Buchanan Damn, Texas and Jim Carthel of San Isabel, Colorado; 4 sisters Shirley Smith of Ft. Worth, Texas, Dorothy Chappel of Meeker, Colorado, Patsy McCollum of Amarillo, Texas, and Beth Gearns of Canyon, Texas; and 2 grandchildren Mac Shipley of Lakin, Kansas and Chelsie Shipley of Queens, New York. Margie is preceded in death by her husband who died in September 1980. She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son Ronald Charles McLain; and a brother Bill Carthel.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the Lakin United Methodist Church in Lakin with Mitchell Carthel officiating. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. The family requests memorials given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.
