Mamie Louise Hughes
Mamie Louise Hughes, 85 died Thursday, March 17, 2016 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born March 21, 1930 in Modoc, Kansas the daughter of Carl Franklin & Alice (Mallory) Shafer.
Mamie grew up in Scott City, Kansas where she attended school. She lived in Various places before moving to Garden City in the mid 1970’s. She has lived in Garden City since. A homemaker, Mamie worked as a waitress at Jade Café for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, embroidery, and taking care of her grandchildren.
On March 25, 1982, she married Roy Hughes in Sturgis, South Dakota. He died September 17, 2010. Mamie is also preceded in death by her parents; six children Linda Pilgrim, Terry McCormick, Steven Vassar, Sharon McCormick, Merideth McCormick, and Dedra Butler; 3 brothers Marvin Shafer, Jimmy Shafer, and Glen Shafer; and 2 sisters Thelma Hollifield and Helen Hignite.
Survivors include 6 children Tonda Eakin of Garden City, Ks., Carol Vassar of Frederick, Ok., Mark Vassar of Holcomb, Ks., Larry McCormick of Sellersburg, In., Clyde McCormick of Wichita, Ks., and Roger Vassar of Pueblo, Co.; a brother Billy Shafer of Springdale, Ar.; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Garden Valley Retirement Village Chapel in Garden City. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family request memorials given to the Mamie Hughes Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
