Longhorns Conclude Season With Lopsided Loss to #4 Beloit in Regional Game-Audio

Beloit, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – The injuries to key players had mounted, the opponent was one of the best teams in the State in 3A and the Holcomb Longhorn Football team ended their season in a lopsided loss to #4 Beloit 60-8 last Saturday night in Regional action. Injuries had taken a toll on the Longhorn’s over the last 3 weeks of the season, when junior’s Heath Tucker, Cory Roth and senior Clay Gilbert sustained injuries and there were more bumps and bruises throughout the team. Tucker and Roth were out for the season, but Gilbert continued to play, but so many younger players stepped in and played with great intensity and did a super job of getting the Longhorn’s to the 3A Regional State Football Play-offs to face #4 Beloit for the first time in nearly ten years.

The Trojans are undefeated on the year and feature a bruising running attack and a suffocating defense and they continued their winning ways last Saturday with the 52 point defeat of the Longhorn’s. Beloit scored early and often on three of their first four possession’s and add an 85 yard defensive touchdown on a pic six by senior strong safety Austin Budke and the Trojans owned a 28-0 advantage at the break.

Holcomb would get their lone score off their opening drive in the 3rd quarter after a 63 yard seven play drive that culminated with senior Aaron Hernandez taking it in from 12 yards out, sophomore Blake Richmeier would get the 2 point conversion and the Trojans led 28-8. There was some hope but that soon vanished, as Beloit would score on each of their next four possession’s, plus get a two point safety when they blocked a Max Ramsey punt into the endzone and recovered it for the extra points making the final score 60-8 and the Trojans move on to the Sectional’s next week to face Sedgwick who had beaten Hillsboro Saturday night. The season ended for the Holcomb Longhorn’s with a 9-2 record and 2nd in the GWAC, and they must say goodbye to an outstanding senior class.
