Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a doubleheader that saw three ranked teams take the court Tuesday night in Scott City, the Holcomb Lady Longhorns and Scott City boys picked up league victories. Holcomb pulled way in the second half from a seven-point deficit to win the girls game 64-27, while the Beaver boys erased an eight-point deficit early on to take down the Longhorns 73-53.

The first game of the evening saw Holcomb be challenged by Scott City in the first half. It seemed as though Holcomb couldn’t miss in the second half. They would put together a 10-0 run in the middle of the third period to push the lead to 38-18, and led 44-20 after three quarters. The Lady Longhorn lead grew to as big as 35 points on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter, as the No. 3 team in Class 3A would force a running clock, due to their 30-point lead, and improve to 8-0 on the year, and now sit atop the GWAC standings thanks to a Hugoton loss to Ulysses. Holcomb (8-0, 3-0) was led by senior Haley Heydman with 16 points, while Taylor Deniston and Kylee Amos added 15, and Jordan Jarnagin finished with 10. It was a battle of state-ranked teams in the nightcap. Both team entered with four-game winning streaks, with there losses against Puebo East. Holcomb started out shooting well, but the Beavers would prove to be too much in the end and picked up the 73-53 win to remain undefeated in league play. The Longhorns jumped out to a 6-1 lead, and 17-9, and led 19-15 after the first quarter. Scott City (5-1, 3-0 GWAC) took their first lead at 22-21 with 5:23 left before halftime. The lead would change four more times, before the Beavers took the lead for good with 4:42 to go in the second quarter, and they would end up leading 34-29 at half. Holcomb (6-2, 2-1) would not get any closer in the second half, as Scott City scored six straight twice, and also had a 10-o run, that included a seven-point trip thanks to two foul shots, two technical free throws and a three pointer by Dylan Hutchins, which pushed Scott City’s lead to 60-43 with 4:39 remaining. They would grow the lead to 20, which ended up being the final. Four Beavers ended up scoring double figures, led by Trey O’Neil with 21, Brett Meyer 18, Sloan Baker had 12, and Brayden Strine added 11.
