Liberal scores late to down Garden City soccer
Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-Don’t tell Garden City Coach Joaquin Padilla how close his team has been all season.
“We made mistakes again,” Padilla said.
That summed up one of the most exciting matches of the season at Buffalo Stadium.
Mike Fonseca scored the winning goal in the 95th minute and Liberal held on to beat Garden City 2-1 on Tuesday night.
But the heartbreaking scenario came when goalie Kender Acevido, who played a brilliant match, let a slow roller skip between his legs for the game winning goal.
“I don’t know, but he probably needs to scoop it up in that situation,” Padilla said.
That goal may have won the match, but Garden City (6-5, 2-5) definitely had their chances in the two extra sessions.
Garden City missed two, point-blank shots in the first overtime that would have won it.
Jose Herrera scored the lone goal for Garden City in the 51st minute to tie it.
Liberal is now 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the WAC
