Law Go Down Late in Home Opener

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City Law overcame two early interceptions of quarterback Charles McCullum, led for most of the game only to fall Saturday night in their home opener to the Oklahoma Defenders 56-49. With the win, Oklahoma is off to a 2-0 start and has a share of first place with Salina. Dodge City falls a game behind at 1-1.

Law quarterback Charles McCullum rebounded from two early interceptions to pass for six touchdowns. Early on the short passing game was working. Brandon Venson caught a four year touchdown pass to open the scoring, Mo Young a four yard TD pass and another three yarder at the end of the half. Later on the long ball was how the Law scored. McCullum connected with Kendrick Ings on a touchdown pass of 30 yards in the third quarter and 48 yards in the fourth.

Consistant play was the theme of the night for the Defenders in chipping away at the Law lead. Their biggest play could have come just before halftime when Robert Anyiam held on to Zach Rasmussen’s 17 yard strike with one second to go. If the Defenders miss on that opportunity they would have been down 23-6 at half. Instead they trail by just 11.

The other big play pulled the Defenders within two at 49-47. Isaiah Anderson returned a kickoff 50 yards with a little more than 7 minutes left. Oklahoma missed on the two point try and the Law still had a two point lead. Down to the last 1:35 Anyiam caught his last of four touchdown receptions on the night, this time a nine yarder and Oklahoma had their 1st lead 54-49.

The Law fumble the kickoff as the squib kick hit an upman and was recovered by Oklahoma. The final score came with sixteen seconds left and down by five when Law quarterback Charles McCullum was sacked in the endzone for a safety.

Highlights

Dodge City has next weekend off then they will travel to Wichita Saturday March 22. Kickoff is 7pm. The Law’s next home game comes March 29 against Salina.
