Lavona M. Schmidt, 77 died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at her home in Garden City. She was born December 16, 1937 in Atwood, Kansas the daughter of Chester & Vonda (Morris) Senger.

Lavona grew up in the Colby, Kansas area where she attended school. After graduating from Colby High School, Lavona attended Barton County Community College where she received her training to become a dietician. Lavona lived in Colby, Ks., North Platte, Ne., and Liberal, Ks. before moving to Garden City in 1962. She has lived in Garden City since. Lavona worked as a Registered Dietician for more than 20 years at the Colby Hospital and at St. Cathererine Hospital. She retired in 1999. Lavona was a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary in Garden City. She enjoyed painting, bird watching, working in her yard, and her dog “Buddy.”

On October 3, 1955, she married Wilmer “Woody” Schmidt in Colby, Kansas. He died on February 14, 2005. Lavona is also preceded in death by her parents and a son David Schmidt. Survivors include two sons Stephen Schmidt of Dodge City, Ks. and Ronald Schmidt of Great Bend, Ks.; three daughters Susan Burelson of Waxahachie, Tx., Marilyn Reynolds of Holcomb, Ks., and Bonnie Standley of Garden City, Ks.; a brother Jim Senger of Louisville, Ky.; five sisters Janice Runions of Grandview, Mo., Mary Bakky of Bremerton, Wa., Jessie Behrens of Colby, Ks., Patricia Chambers of Minnesota, and Freda Boucher of Oregon; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Scott Schurle officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to service time Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to the donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
