Lakin Softball Sweeps Beavers
Scott City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)–On a very windy Thursday afternoon in Scott City, the Lakin Broncs came in and swept the Lady Beavers in a doubleheader, with 13-11 and 15-5 victories in rescheduled games from Tuesday.
In game one, the Broncs got on the board first, scoring six first inning runs. Scott City would tack on their first two runs in the bottom of the second inning, and trail 7-2, only to see Lakin come back with a five-run third inning for their biggest lead. The Lady Beavers would make a comeback, scoring the next six runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 12-8. Scoring was stopped until the top of the seventh, when the Lady Broncs tacked on an insurance run, that proved to be big. Scott City made a three-run rally in their final at bat, and the game ended with the tying run up to bat. Kayla Swank had three of Lakin’s 11 hits in the game, and she drove in three runs. Scott City had a two-hit game from Kristi Faurot, got three rbi from Charlotte Bickimer. Jhoryn Hernandez pitched three and two-thirds innings to get the win for the Broncs, while Kelsey Kuckelman took the loss.
It was a shortened game two, due to the 10-run rule with the game ending in the fifth inning. Just like game one, Lakin would jump out to the early lead, leading 2-0 after one inning, and tacking on five runs in the second and third innings to lead 12-1 after three innings. The Broncs would extend it to 15-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, when Scott City’s offense came to life. They would score four runs, but left runners on base that would have extended the game. Lakin would collect 18 hits in the game, compared to four for the Lady Beavers. Darrie Rogers had four hits for the Lady Broncs, and having three each were Megan Armstrong, Mariah Watkins and Mariah Campbell. Scott City’s Kelsey Kuckelman had two hits. Armstrong drove in three runs for the Lady Broncs, and Taylor George drove in two for the Lady Beavers. Karlee Davidson took the win in game two and Kuckelman suffered the loss.
