Lakin Baseball Takes a Pair From Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in a make up doubleheader from Tuesday, Scott City was able to finally play their first home games of the season. Unfortunately for the Beavers, Lakin would steal the show and come away with a doubleheader sweep, winning 3-2 in the first game and 9-6 in the second on a beautiful day for baseball Thursday.
Game one moved along quickly through the first three scoreless innings. In the top of the fourth, Lakin got on the board first, scoring all three of their runs, which proved to be enough. Only one of the runs was earned. Scott City fought back, picking up their first hit of the game in the fifth inning, and also their first run. The Beavers tacked on another run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the seventh, Scott City left the tying run 90 feet away from home plate and dropped their first contest of the season. The Broncs saw Dalton Shalberg strike out 15 Beavers, going all seven inning, and scattered three hits, and gave up his first two runs of the year to get the win. Brandon Miller drove in the lone RBI of the game for Lakin. Drew Kite picked up the loss for Scott City. He also went all seven innings on the mound, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out eight.
In the second game, Scott City scored the first run of the game, and led 1-0 through the first two innings. Getting out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning, the Beavers saw Lakin score three in the third to take the lead 3-1. In the bottom of the inning, Scott City answered back on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Broncs tacked on two in the fourth inning, but a Beaver rally with three in the bottom of the frame tied the game at five. It would be tied until Lakin broke it open in the sixth with three runs. They would tack on an insurance run in the seventh. Scott City was only able to add a run in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the tying run at the plate, and dropped the second game 9-6. The Broncs outhit the Beavers 10-7, and also left 11 runners on base. Kevin Dasenbrock went all seven innings for Lakin to pick up the win, scattering seven hits and six runs. He struck out nine Beavers. Tyler Hess pitched the first four innings, surrendering five runs on five huts and struck out six. Brett O’Neil took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings of work, while striking out seven. Daylan Gilleland drove in three runs for Lakin, and had two hits in five at bats. Scott City had seven players collect a hit each, including three doubles.
Scott City (2-2) will host Holcomb for two games Friday at 4, while Lakin (6-0) will host Elkhart on Monday.
