Lady Red Demons beat Garden City in 7th place game of NIT
Newton, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School girls basketball team beat rival Garden City in the seventh place game of the Newton Invitational Tournament 38-24.
The Lady Red Demons overcame a slow start after falling behind in the first quarter 6-4. Dodge City responded in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Buffaloes 14-2 to take and 18-8 lead at halftime.
The Red Demon girls withstood a comeback from Garden City in the third quarter as they got as close as 2 points. Dodge still took a five point lead into the fourth quarter 24-19. In the fourth quarter the Lady Red Demons put it away outscoring Garden 14-5. Madison Armstrong nailed a big three with six minutes to play to stretch the lead back out to ten.
Dodge City(7-5, 1-1) was sparked by a different starting lineup as Lauren Gleason and Hayden Sanchez go their first starts of the season and Caroline Williams had her second start. They joined usual starters Kisa Unruh and Chidera Okoro.
The Lady Red Demons had one of their better shooting performances of the season shooting 13-32 for 41 percent. Garden City(4-9, 0-3) shot just 10-48 for 21 percent. Dodge City also won the rebounding battle 38-26 and scored 13 points off 14 Lady Buffalo turnovers.
Freshman Kisa Unruh led the way in scoring with 10 points. Chidera Okoro had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Lauren Gleason and Madison Armstrong both contributed with 5 points. Josie Calzonetti led the way for Garden City with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
The Dodge City girls and boys will play again Tuesday night at home in a WAC rivalry showdown with Garden City. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on Z-98 and westernkansasnews.com. The girls tip-off at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.
