Lady Demons top Topeka to advance in Sub-States
Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City High School girls basketball team topped Topeka Tuesday night 43-34 in the first round of the sub-state playoffs.
The Lady Demons led most of the game despite a slow start for both teams offensively. Topeka’s only lead was 3-2, the lady Trojans would tie the game at 18 in the third quarter before Dodge City asserted themselves again. The Lady Demons scored 21 points in the fourth quarter after only scoring 22 in the first three.
Dodge City controlled the boards outrebounding Topeka 42-29, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second chance points. Both teams struggled shooting the Lady Demons were 11-35, while the lady Trojans were just 10-47. Defensively Dodge City held Topeka’s leading scoring Jaryn Benning to 10 points on 3-10 shooting, Benning also had 13 rebounds. Dodge City was aggressive attacking the basket and shot 19-31 at the foul line.
Ezinne Okoro led the way for Dodge City with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Chidera Okoro had 7 points and 10 rebounds. Kisa Unruh struggled from the field, but make big free-throws down the stretch, finishing with 11 points and 8-10 at the line. Caroline Williams also chipped in with 8 points.
Dodge City will play at Derby Friday night in the second round of sub-state. Pre-game coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. and tip-off at 7 p.m. on Z-98 and westernkansasnews.com
