Lady Buffs soccer loses heart breaker

Wichita, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-All that starts well doesn’t necessarily end well. That was the case for the Lady Buffs soccer team on opening night.

Garden City couldn’t hold a late lead as Wichita Northwest stole one in overtime 4-3 on Tuesday night.

“We played well,” Assistant Coach Josue Negron said afterwards. “We moved the ball very well; it’s just a couple of balls didn’t bounce our way.”

The Grizzlies (1-0) scored first when Wendy Davis found a soft spot in the second minute of the game. But the Buffs (0-1) responded nine minutes later when Evelyn Rodriguez setup Amber Miller for the equalizer.

In the second half, it appeared Garden City would grab the lead for good on the back of Maria Rodriguez’s two unassisted goals. But Paige Achey’s unassisted goal in the 72nd minute tied the match 3-3. It wouldn’t be the last time the Buffs heard from the all-region player.

In overtime, Garden City was called for a foul in the goal box setting up Achey’s second score: A penalty kick that landed in the net-giving the Grizzlies a dramatic one-goal victory.

“It’s something we’ll learn from moving forward,” Negron said. “Kids played hard.”
