Lady Buffs Lose Third Place Game in Newton

Newton, KS (westernkansasnews.com)  The Garden City High School girls team (8-7) pulled to within five points early in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump in losing 60-44 to host Newton during the third place game of the 39th Annual Newton Invitational.

For the Lady Railers it was their second win over Garden City this year (43-30 win against Garden City in Hays Shootout back in December).  The Railers also captured third in their own tournament for the third straight season.

Senior Taylor Stahly proved why she is going to Hutchinson next year scoring 23 and made all three of her free throws after being fouled on a three point attempt by Buffaloes guard Abbie Dart.  Railers post player Payton Roberts-Parker added 12.  The Railers closed on a 17-6 run.

Dart led all Garden City players with 14,  Tiffany Butler scored 9 and Jaymie Bernbeck 8 including six second half points.  The loss stopped Garden City from having their best finish in the tournament since 2004. GCHS is back at home Friday night when they host Guymon.
