Lady Buffaloes sweep Great Bend on the road in extra innings

GREAT BEND, KAN (WesternKansasNews.Com) – unbelievable, but achievable was the only way to describe the ending to Thursday nights final game in the three game series. Garden City on the road for yet another double header conference game and the target on larger than ever on their back.

Game 1 would be a breeze for the Buffaloes winning 4-0 on Great Bend after Brie Manwarren would take the win in the circle. The pitcher surrendered zero runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out 13 and walking one.

Jordan Turner took the loss for Great Bend. The bulldog allowed seven hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out eight.

Garden City opened up scoring in the second inning, when an error scored one run for the Lady Buffs.

Garden City notched three runs in the seventh inning. The Buffaloes big bats were led by Yesenia Castro, Piper Harris, and Angel Serrano, all driving in runs in the inning.

Game 2

They say those who work hard for what they want in life will achieve it, as Brie Manwarren and the Lady Buffs proved that in game two.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Brie Manwarren struck out 20 a personal best, while Paige Thexton sat down eight.

Garden City started the scoring in the third inning after scoring one run on Manwarren’s single. Top of the fifth inning, Brie Manwarren would make it 2-0 on a RBI hit to bring in Jesy Foster.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Great Bend tied things up at two when Lauryn Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring two runs.

For 9 innings straight it would remain 2-2 until finally one team would give. Top of the fourteenth inning, Piper Harris singled on a 0-1 count, scoring Brie Manwarren. Now 3-2 heading into the bottom, Garden City still had to take care of business and they did. Brie got her 20th strikeout in the game and two quick ground out plays would etch this game into the history books forever.

Manwarren was the winning pitcher for the Lady Buffs. The righty lasted 14 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs while striking out 20 and walking zero.

Thexton took the loss for Great Bend. The pitcher allowed 11 hits and three runs over 14 innings, striking out eight.

Garden City totaled 11 hits in the game. Harris, Manwarren, and Yesenia Castro all had multiple hits for the Buffaloes. Manwarren and Harris all had three hits to lead Garden City. The girls move to 11-2 overall and 9-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. They play Dodge City Tuesday in a double header.
