Lady Beaver volleyball sweeps Scott City quadrangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off their first loss of the season last week, Scott City looked to bounce back. That they did. Playing at home for the first time on Tuesday, the Lady Beavers gave the home fans what they wanted. After sweeping Wichita County and Goodland, it was Lakin to finish up the evening. It would be the only match to go three sets. In the end, the Lady Beavers would win the match in three sets 26-24, 22-25 and 25-21. They swept the Lady Indians earlier with wins of 25-6, 25-9 and Goodland 25-22, 25-11.
In the first match, it really wasn’t close, as Scott City started out up 10-2. After it was tied 1-1 in the the first set, the Lady Beavers scored 20 of the next 23 points and led 21-4, before cruising to a 25-6 win. Wichita County put up a fight early in the second set, pulling to within 5-4, only to see Scott City use a 17-4 run to end the set and match quickly, as the Lady Beavers prevailed 25-9 in set two. Clarissa Ratzlaff had five kills for Scott City, Jalynn Habiger had five aces, while Brandi Shearmire had three more aces.
The second match pitted two GWAC teams for the first time this year. Scott City led Goodland for the early part of the first set, jumping out to a 9-5 lead. The Cowgirls chipped away, going on a 15-5 run to take a 20-14 lead. When it looked like Goodland would take the set, Scott City roared back. Trailing 22-19, the Lady Beavers scored the final six points to win 25-22. They would start off the second set picking up from where they left off, starting out the set with a 10-2 lead. Following a Cowgirl timeout, an 8-2 run by Goodland would bring them back in to the set trailing 12-10. That would be the last run by the Cowgirls. Scott City closed the match on a tear, with a 13-1 run and completed the sweep with a 25-11 win. Clarissa Ratzlaff had six kills in the win. Scott City’s win over Goodland was their first since 2012.
The finale of the evening for Scott City would be a thriller with Lakin. Both teams came in 2-0 on the day, and would treat the crowd to a match that went back and forth throughout. Lakin would come out strong and take a 9-3 lead in the first set, only to see Scott City rattle off an 11-4 run to take the 14-13 lead midway through. The Lady Broncs countered with five straight to lead 18-14. They led 23-18, and it looked like they would win the opening set. Scott City fought back, scoring eight of the final nine points to win the first set 26-24. In the second set, neither team could build a lead bigger than four. Lakin led early 10-6, and Scott City led 16-12. The Lady Broncs used an 11-4 run to lead 23-20, only to see the Lady Beavers pull to within 23-22, but Lakin forced a third set by scoring the final two points of the set. In the final set, the teams tied nine times, and traded six times. Scott City took the lead for good, when they scored three straight to lead 17-15. They would grow their lead to 20-16, only to see Lakin get to within 21-20. The Lady Beavers scored four of the final five points of the set to take the final set 25-21, ensuring their first win over the Lady Broncs since 2012. In the final match of the evening, Macy Berning led the Scott City attack with 11 kills, while Jalynn Habiger added eight kills and three aces, and Tyler Vondracek had three service aces as well.
Other matches on Tuesday saw Lakin sweep Goodland 25-18, 25-22 and Wichita County 25-8, 25-12. Goodland defeated Wichita County 25-10, 25-16. After Tuesday, Scott City improves to 5-1 on the year, their best start since 2012. Lakin is now 10-2, Goodland 1-9 and Wichita County 0-13.
Scott City will play in the Colby Triangular on Thursday, taking on Colby and Hoxie. Goodland will go to the Dundy County, NE triangular on Thursday, taking on Dundy County and Norton, Lakin will play at the Wichita County Triangular next Tuesday, and Wichita County will be at the Dighton Tournament on Saturday.
