Lady Beaver Volleyball starts season with two wins

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team got their season off to a good start on Friday afternoon in Oakley, as they faced Oakley and Wallace County in a triangular on the first day that competition is allowed for volleyball. Scott City came in and took care of business in both of their matches, sweeping Wallace County 25-14, 25-9 and knocked of the Lady Plainsmen 25-17, 25-5. The Lady Wildcats defeated Oakley in three sets 23-25, 25-17, 25-17.

In their first match of the afternoon, Scott City never trailed. Their opening set saw them gradually pulling away, using a 9-2 run to lead 22-11 late in the first set, before taking a 25-14 win. Sixteen of their 25 points came via kill, block or ace. They picked up from where they left off to open the second set, jumping out to a 13-3 lead, and lead by 16 points on a pair of occasions, before taking the set and match with a 25-9 second set win. Payton Goodman and Kennedy Holstein had five kills each, while Ella Rumford had three kills, two block points and two aces. Erika Felker had three service aces.

The Lady Beavers would face some early adversity in their final match of the day against Oakley. Oakley got out to a 9-5 lead, before a 7-1 Scott City run put them back up 12-10. After it was tied at 12, the Lady Beavers scored six of the next seven points, and closed the set with five straight to take a 25-17 win. They would dominate the second set, leading 10-2, and 18-3, before cruising to a 25-5 win over the Lady Plainsmen. Ella Rumford had five kills with three block points, while Payton Goodman had six kills and Kennedy Holstein had four kills and two service aces. In their opening set, the Lady Beavers scored 18 of their 25 points on kills, aces and blocks.

At 2-0 on the year, Scott City will turn around and compete in the Hays High Invitational on Saturday. They will be in a pool with Hays, Oakley and Salina South before bracket play begins.
