Lady Beaver softball takes two from Hugoton
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Wrapping up the regular season on Friday, Scott City would face Hugoton for their final tuneup before regional play on Monday. The Lady Beavers would start slowly in the first game and build up steam after that, as they picked up a pair of run-rule games 11-0 and 21-6.
Scott City 11, Hugoton 0, Game 1
It would take five innings for the Lady Beavers to win their first game of the afternoon. A scoreless game would change with two outs in the bottom of the first, when Malorie Cupp took a fly ball over the centerfield fence to give Scott City a 1-0 lead. The big inning the Lady Beavers needed would take place in the bottom of the third, when they took advantage of Hugoton errors. They would score five runs, as Hannah Tucker drove in a run early, and Cupp delivered on a two-run single in the inning, as the scoring was capped when Makayla Miller reached on an error that scored Cupp to make it 6-0. Scott City added a run in the fourth and with two outs in the fifth, Tucker would end the game on a run rule, with a three-run home run to make the final 11-0.
Cheyenne Cramer scattered four hits and struck out eight in five innings of work for the win. Hannah Tucker would go 3-4 with five RBI, while Malorie Cupp had three hits and drove in three runs. Amber Latta had three hits and scored three runs, as the Lady Beavers finished with 10 hits. Marrine Williams took the loss, giving up 11 runs, just 10 earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts. Taylor Grubbs had two hits for Hugoton.
Scott City 21, Hugoton 6, Game 2
The Lady Eagles would take an early lead to start off game two at 1-0 after a half an inning, as Amanda Farnum’s sacrifice fly would score Kenzie Garza. Scott City responded by sending 15 to bat in the bottom of the first, and put up 12 runs. The Lady Beavers had eight hits in the first inning to go up 12-1. Cheyenne Cramer would pick up a pair of RBI in that inning on a triple and single, and Tori Ford had two hits and drove in two runs in the inning. Scott City added two more runs in the second to make it 14-1, only to see Hugoton soar back to within nine in the top of the third inning to make it 14-6. Taylor Grubbs would hit a two-run home run to highlight their comeback efforts. The Lady Beavers would settle down and rally back with four runs in the third and finished the game off by reaching base on an error with two outs to make the final 21-6 in a game that was called in the fourth inning.
Hannah Tucker got the start in game two, and gave up six runs, four earned, on just one hit with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Cheyenne Cramer went the final 2 1/3 innings, and struck out four. Amber Latta, Tucker and Cramer had three hits, as Cramer had four RBI, Tucker and Malorie Cupp drove in three runs. The Lady Beavers had 17 hits in game two. Marrine Williams took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits, and recorded just one out in the game. Taylor Grubb had their lone hit and drove in two on the home run.
With the win, Scott City ties a school record for the most wins in school history at 18. It’s the first time since 2016 they have 18 wins in a season. They’re now 18-2 on the year, finishing 10-2 in GWAC play, and will begin regional play on Monday against the winner of the Hugoton/Southwestern Heights play-in game. Hugoton ended their regular season at 6-14 overall, and 2-10 in league play.
Scott City has clinched a share of the GWAC title with their wins today. It’s their first league crown since 2018.
