Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing at home for the first time this year on Tuesday, the Scott City Lady Beavers took advantage of the opportunity, especially when they needed it the most. Southwestern Heights came in looking to erase their five-game losing skid, and played better than their record indicated in the first game. It took extra innings to decide the first game, as Scott City rallied to win 7-6 in eight innings, and they completed the sweep in the second game with a 17-2 thumping in three innings in the finale.

Scott City 7, Southwestern Heights 6, Game 1 (8 Inn.)
Runs were at minimum for a majority of the game for both teams. The first game of the day would be scoreless until the third inning, when Southwestern Heights scored first on an RBI sacrifice fly by Brittany Jennings, scoring Anahi Juarez to take the early 1-0 lead. Scott City would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, as Krystal Appel and Lyndi Rumford would score on passed balls to give the Lady Beavers the 2-1 lead. Scott City responded two innings later, opening up a 5-1 lead, that was highlighted by a Kaitlyn Roberts two-run single, scoring Bailey Latta and Macie Price. It looked as if the Lady Beavers had the game under control. The Lady Mustangs would start their rally with one run in the sixth and took advantage of four walks in the seventh inning, as Yeli Puentes singled in Jennings to give Southwestern Heights a 6-5 edge. Scott City responded in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI pop up by Price, scoring Latta, which forced extra innings. The Lady Mustangs would be retired in order in the top of the eighth, and the Lady Beavers took full advantage. Lyndi Rumord hit a one-out triple and scored on the very next pitch on a passed ball to pick up the win. Kaitlyn Roberts went all eight innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts, and four walks. She helped her cause out by driving in two runs. Nancy Wiebe and Rumford had two hits each for Scott City, as they ended up with six hits in the contest. Tembree Couch took the loss, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, and struck out six. Beatrice Adame and Brittany Jennings each drove in two runs, while Maria Gutierrez and Yeli Puentes each had two hits.

Scott City 17, Southwestern Heights 2, Game 2 (3 Inn.)
As much drama as their was in the first game, the second game was the complete opposite. Scott City sent 12 to bat in the first inning, scoring nine runs on five hits and took a 9-0 lead. Southwestern Heights would rally once, and it would be the second inning, as they scored all two of their runs in that inning to pull to within 9-2. The Lady Beavers responded in the bottom of the inning with seven more runs, sending 10 to bat to take a 16-2 lead. Kaitlyn Roberts opened the bottom of the third inning with a double, and two batters later would score on a wild pitch to end the game 17-2. Lyndi Rumford picked up her first varsity win in her first appearance, giving up two runs on two hits with a strikeout in three innings pitched. Bailey Latta had three hits and scored three times in the second game, while Krystal Appel, Macie Price and Kaitlyn Roberts each had two hits. The Lady Beavers finished with 10 hits. Kaitlin Arellano took the loss for the Lady Mustangs, going just 2/3 of an inning, giving up seven runs on three hits. Tembree Couch went 1 1/3-plus innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Couch and Brittany Jennings each drove in a run, as they had only two hits in the game.

Scott City is 4-2 overall, and will begin a busy week next Monday with a doubleheader at Elkhart, while Southwestern Heights is 1-7, and will host Spearville on Thursday.
