Lady Beaver softball sweeps Cimarron

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the second time this week, the Scott City Lady Beaver softball team would hit the road for a GWAC doubleheader, as they faced the Cimarron Bluejays for the first time in school history. It would be a big day for the Lady Beavers, as they were able to pick up a road sweep with wins of 14-9 and 9-7.

In their first game, Scott City led 2-0 after the first inning, only to see the Lady Bluejays pull to within 2-0 after two innings. Following a scoreless third, the teams would trade runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Beavers opened the game up with a run in the fifth, four in the sixth, and sixth in the seventh inning to go up 14-2. Cimarron made a furious rally with a seven-run seventh inning, but fell short 14-9. Rhiley Stoppel had three hits and drove in two runs for the Lady Beavers, while Melanie Duff had two runs and batted three in, and Madison Miller had two hits and two RBI. Cheyenne Cramer went the distance, giving up nine runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts. 

Both teams would continue their offense in game two early on. Scott City took an early 5-0 lead after a half an inning. Cimarron would pull to within 5-3 after an inning of play. The Lady Beavers added a run in the second inning to go up 6-3. It took until the bottom of the fifth inning to see the next run. The Lady Bluejays would take the lead with four runs in the inning to go up 7-3. Scott City tied the game in the sixth, and scored the go ahead runs in the seventh, and hung on for the 9-7 win. Amber Latta had three hits and had three runs in game two, while Melanie Duff had three hits and drove in two runs. Cheyenne Cramer got the win, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up four unearned runs on three hits with nine strikeouts. Hannah Tucker went 2/3 of an inning, surrendering three runs on one hit. 

Scott City is 14-2 overall, 8-2 in GWAC play, as they will be at Stanton County next Friday, and wrap up their regular season on Tuesday, May 11, at home against Hugoton. Cimarron drops to 6-6 overall, 2-6 in league play, and will host Lakin on Monday, before traveling to Hugoton on Tuesday.
