Topeka, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Kansas State High School Activities Association released classifications on Wednesday. This year, it would be a significant shift for schools across the state, and it made an impact to southwest Kansas schools. It’s the first year that Classes 6A, 5A and 4A would have 36 schools in their classification. Classes 3A and 2A remained at 64 schools, while 1A actually saw a brand new school to the activities association, making the class to 117 member schools.

In southwest Kansas, Liberal moved to Class 6A, which is a change to the area. Even in the old classification system, they would have been in the class with the enrollment. Class 3A saw area schools move into that classification to no surprise. Hugoton and Holcomb dropped from Class 4A. Lakin has officially dropped to Class 2A after being a longtime Class 3A school, while dropping to Class 1A were Kinsley, Spearville, and Hodgeman County.

While the classifications will remain the same for the schools for many activities, some of the activities will see it change, including golf, tennis and wrestling. Some of the regional assignments have been released, with the remainder of the fall sports being released by next week. Here’s an explanation on how each sport will be broken down by classification. http://kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/NewClassificationPostseason.pdf
