KSHSAA Board of Directors approve classification proposals

Topeka, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Board of Director’s meeting may have been one of the biggest in a long time.

The Board of Directors approved two proposals that could impact schools not only schools in western Kansas, but across the state. 

For the reclassification of football passed 56-11. However, the next vote to approve the classification changes is now in the hands of the member schools, from Class 4A to Class 1A. If passed, Class 6A, Class 5A and Class 4A would have 32 teams. Class 4A would adopt what Classes 5A & 6A do with the regular season and playoffs. Classes 3A and 2A would be at 48 teams, with districts of six teams each, and Class 1A would return for the first time since the 1980’s with roughly 35 schools. Eight Man I & II would remaing the same, but move their football championship games to the same weekend as the 11-man teams to avoid playing three games in 10 days. 

As for all other activities, the board passed the proposed reclassficiation by a 52-15 vote. The changes proposed would eliminate two divisions for some activities in Classes 4A & 1A, and increase the number of schools in Classes 6A & 5A from 32-36 schools. Class 4A would have 48 schools, Class 3A & Class 2A would have 64 schools, and Class 1A would have 117 schools. While the number of schools is 117, a few of those schools co-op for some sports. 

If passed by the KSHSAA member schools, the reclassifications would go into effect the 2018-19 calendar year.
