KHP releases identities of those killed in March dust storm on I-70

crash

The Kansas Highway Patrol has released the names of the victims who were killed March 14 just before 3:30 pm on I-70 in Sherman County.

According to the report, the KHP was notified of a multi-vehicle, mass casualty collision event on I-70 between mileposts 28.1 and 28.3 in eastern Sherman County, near the town of Edson. The collision area is approximately nine miles east of Goodland, and adjacent to the Sherman County Road 30 overpass.

A total of 71 vehicles were identified as being involved in the collision, resulting in eight fatalities and 46 injured parties, who were transported to local hospitals.

The victims in the accident were 20-year-old Dawson Hogan of Salina, 72-year-old Larry Smith of Sharon Springs, 57-year-old Manuel Alacron of Dodge City, 31-year-old Mario Juarez of Garden City, 24-year-old Baiel Sharshembiev of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 48-year-old Carlos Arzate of Shattuck, Oklahoma, 61-year-old Stephane Purcell of Evansville, Indiana and 60-year-old Giovanni Stephan of Troy, Michigan.

Multiple motor vehicle collision reports will be completed to document and separate the collisions that occurred within the event. Investigators believe the separate collisions occurred between the times of approximately 3:20 to 3:35 pm CDT.

Due to the extreme circumstances the exact sequence of events is currently under investigation.
