Kenneth Wayne Bogue

Kenneth Wayne Bogue, age 94, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Park View Assisted Living in Ulysses, Kansas.  He was born in Luther, Oklahoma on May 22, 1920 to Elza M. and Mildred F. (Kennedy) Bogue. 

He attended grade school in Norfolk and Cushing, Oklahoma, and graduated from high school in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1938.  He received his B.S. Degree in 1941 from CentralState in Edmond, Oklahoma; his M.S. Degree in 1951 from PhillipsUniversity in Enid, Oklahoma; and other graduate work he received was from Hays, Kansas and Boulder, Colorado. 

On June 6, 1941, he married Alma E. Giles in Chandler, Oklahoma.  He taught school in Arcadia, Oklahoma.  During World War II, Kenneth served in the United States Navy in San Diego and Oakland, California.  After his discharge, the family lived in Cherokee, Oklahoma before settling in Ulysses, Kansas in 1951.  He coached high school Debate, and taught Speech, English, and Drama from 1951 – 1963.  He served as high school Principal for two years, and as Assistant Superintendent from 1966-1977 when he retired. 

After retiring, he and Alma established a Lapidary business.  This took them to gem and mineral shows in Kansas and surrounding states until 2003 when they retired again.  

While their sons were growing up during school years, the family spent summer vacations camping and travelling to historical and scenic places all over the United States except Hawaii and the southeast part of the United States. 

Kenneth was a life-time member of the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch.  Besides teaching church school classes, he was a choir member for years, as well as serving in official capacity.  Other interests he enjoyed included being a member of a Barbershop quartet, the Lion’s Club (25 years), being on bowling teams and playing chess with his buddies.  His family and friends enjoyed the poetry he wrote and all the personal greeting and Christmas cards he created especially after his retirement from the Ulysses School System in 1977. 

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Alma of Ulysses, Kansas; two sons: Stan and Judy Bogue of Hinton, Iowa, and Keith and Joyce Bogue of Monument, Colorado; three grandchildren: Scott Bogue of Amarillo, Texas, Amy and Allan Spiers of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Brinne Bogue of Sioux City, Iowa; and six great-grandchildren. 

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Elza Jr. of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Orel E. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and one grandson, Braden Bogue of Hinton, Iowa. 

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, Kansas.  Inurnment will follow at the UlyssesCemetery in Ulysses, Kansas.  Memorial contributions may be given to the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch or to Youthville in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W.
