Garden City, KS-Kendra Flyer has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Garden City. But she could not pass up the opportunity presented to her late Monday night.

Following board approval, Flyer was hired on as the new girls coach at Syracuse High School.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about the program,” Flyer said. “But it’s obviously hard because Garden City has been my home the last few years.

Flyer came to Garden City at a crucial time in program development. She spent a half season at Fowler High School before joining Matt Pfeifer, who had just been hired on to replace David Upton.

“Working with Matt was great,” Flyer said. “I learned a lot about the offensive side of things because I’ve always been a defensive-minded coach.”

Before her short stint at Fowler, Flyer was a student assistant at her Alma mater, Bethany, where she played for four years.

“My husband had to move because of his job, and I was looking for a school that I could become part of the family and part of the tradition.”

She replaces Syracuse alum Bryce Simon.
