KDOT Decides on Point of Rocks Highway Expanision

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) After lobbying from outside groups KDOT has decided to go with a 16 instead of 60 foot median in adding another lane to Highway 50 outside Dodge City.  The final decision keeps more of the Point of Rocks. KDOT spokesman Kirk Hutchinson says making this determination was not easy.

Most of the route will still have a 60 foot median beginning at Cimarron. The engineers originally wanted a larger median because they felt it was safer.  This move is in line with the 69 million dollars budgeted for the project.  President of the local chapter at the Santa Fe Trails Association Bill Bunyan says lobbying efforts helped.  

Construction will begin in four years.
