MANHATTAN, Kan. – Thanks to a forced fumble that led to a touchdown, a game-clinching interception and a career-high 11 tackles at No. 3 Oklahoma, Kansas State senior safety Jahron McPherson has been named the Walter Camp National FBS Defensive Player of the Week, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Sunday.
McPherson forced a third-quarter fumble in Oklahoma territory that was recovered by the Wildcats and led to a touchdown, helping K-State score on five-straight possessions in the second half to erase a school-record tying 21-point deficit. His interception came with 34 seconds remaining in the contest with the Wildcats clinging to a three-point lead. It was K-State’s third interception of the day and the third in McPherson’s career.
A native of Basehor, Kansas, McPherson’s 11 tackles nearly doubled his previous career high of six, which came last season at Mississippi State. He helped the Wildcats earn their first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.McPherson is the fifth Wildcat to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors and the first in eight seasons. Current quarterbacks coach Collin Klein and defensive back Allen Chapman were both honored in 2012 following games against West Virginia and Oklahoma State, respectively.
The Wildcats return to action this Saturday as they take on Texas Tech inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on FS1.
