MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior Wyatt Hubert has been named a candidate for a national award for the second time in as many weeks as he landed on the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced Tuesday.
It marks the second-straight season that Hubert is a candidate for the Nagurski Trophy as the National Defensive Player of the Year. It is the 21st time a Wildcat has been in consideration for the award, which includes previous finalists Chris Canty (1995 and 1996), Jeff Kelly (1998 runner up) and Terence Newman (2002).
Hubert, who was named to the Bednarik Award watch list and the Preseason All-Big 12 team last week, was a 2019 First Team All-Big 12 performer by both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press. As a sophomore, the Topeka, Kansas, native totaled 33 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks as he also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Player and Defensive Lineman of the Year awards.
Hubert enters his junior campaign ranked 12th nationally among active players in career sacks per game (0.50) and 13th in career tackles for loss per game (0.91). He has recorded 11.5 sacks over his first two seasons, tied for the second most ever by a Wildcat prior to his junior campaign.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which will finish unveiling their preseason watch lists this week.
